Where does space start and where
does it end. What are its boundaries.
What makes a room a room? Walls
like skin wrapped around air. A room.
A room in a room. A room in a room in
another room. A room that’s no longer
a room because it’s full of another room.
I’ve been thinking about how the relationship between things like in/out or backdrop/subject becomes murky. Often in my work, I’ve explored this in reference to architectural space, sometimes playing directly with the gallery site.
Draft was made in 2-3 weeks at the Vault Gallery, Victoria, BC - it’s a diagram. In it, backstage steps into the spotlight and the gallery and installation negotiate their roles. Each room is an entity that affects its subjects and gets affected in return.
